Iconography | IC213

Find Spot: Fossum, ksp. Tanum, Bohuslan, Sweden

Date of Illustration: Nordic Bronze Age

***Description:***In this piece of brass instrument iconography, dating from the Bronze Age in Sweden, the gender of the particpants is clearly indicated. The brass players are clearly male and the dancer female as their respective genitalia are shown. In addition, the presence of the dancer’s pigtailed coiffure also points to her gender. One other feature of this iconography is the presence of a pair of different instruments, one being very similar to the cornu shown in iconography from Nortern Italy and the other looking somewhat lke the lituus seen in that area. Thus, the complentary duality which is a feature of brass instrument ensembles is shown in this Bronze-Age rock art
