Irish Horn from Dowris, Whigsborough, Co. Offaly

Specimen Detail | SD014

The Dowris horns were part of a hoard containing many tools, weapons, crotals, beaten bronze buckets and cauldrons.

According to MacWhite, Raftery (J?) considers that some of the hoard dates to somewhere around 400 BCE or so. The conical rivets seen in the hoard have been traced to Leeds Type Bl cauldrons, confirming the dating of the B Group to Late Bronze Age B, a date around 600-500 B.C. dating for the type, is confirmed by cauldron from Llyn Fawr (Fox 1939) in Wales. Hence Phase B of the Age is a good date for the B Group and to some extent for the The terminal date for the horns is not easy to fix, but the ending of Phase B, caused by the spread of a La Tene derived culture with with an iron-using economy, is as close as he felt it could be placed at the time. Raftery places the arrival of this replacement culture somewhere around 175 BCE
